Forum for Action
Sebastopol Seeks Action on Health Care Woes

All West County residents concerned about the future direction of health care are invited to a free forum on Thursday, December 6 to discuss the national health care crisis and its impact on local medical care.

The non-partisan Health Care Forum, sponsored by Palm Drive Health Care Foundation, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Analy High School auditorium. Other sponsors include nearly a dozen West County churches and health care organizations.

Forum attendees will have a chance to ask questions of state and local health care experts and learn how community members can work together to bring about needed changes in the health care system.

Assemblyman Mark Leno, who is working for health care reform at the state level, together with experts at the local level, will talk about single-payer legislation and the push for a compromise health care measure for California. Other topics include the county's plans to develop a cohesive health care system in Sonoma County and the current crisis at Palm Drive Hospital.

Speakers include Supervisor Mike Reilly, Public Health Director Mary Maddux Gonzales, Evan Rayner, the chief executive officer of Healdsburg Hospital; Rudy Lacoe, president of Health Care For All; Dr. Brad Drexler, president of the Sonoma County Medical Association; Jim Kelly, a veterans' affairs advocate; and Dan Smith, an advocate for community hospitals. Sebastopol Mayor Sam Pierce will moderate the meeting.

At the end of the meeting, Linda Johnson, president of the Palm Drive Hospital Board, will summarize actions the community can take to bring about changes in health care. Attendees will also receive an action packet with names and contact numbers.
